Aldrine Kibet’s Celta Fortuna close in on Segunda promotion

Aldrine Kibet’s Celta Fortuna is on the verge of achieving a historic, first-ever promotion to the Segunda División (La Liga 2) after claiming a crucial 0-0 draw against Ponferradina in the first leg of the promotion playoff final on Saturday, June 13, 2026.
The high-stakes tie saw Fredi Álvarez’s side focus heavily on a disciplined defensive setup as they avoided trailing in the tie.
The Harambee Stars youngster did not make the starting XI for this cagey first leg as the manager relied on the core veteran presence of the reserve squad, but the scoreless draw sets up a massive winner-take-all second leg.

With the clash delicately poised, Fortuna now heads back home at Balaidos for the second leg of the promotion playoff finale.
Home advantage
Alvarez’s team will seek to maximise the home advantage for the Saturday, June 20, 2026, return leg in what will be the team’s third attempt for a maiden promotion to the Segunda.
For Kibet and co., promotion will seal a dream ending to his first season in the paid ranks in Spain.
The youngster joined Celta Vigo on a four-year deal in July 2025 from the Nàstic Sports Academy. While he was primarily signed for the U19 (Cantera) side, Kibet’s meteoric rise saw him integrated into Celta Vigo B (Celta Fortuna)
He has already tasted silverware this year by helping the Celta U19s secure promotion to the Copa de Campeones.
Among his standout performances in the team is a remarkable five-goal heroics that earned Celta Vigo U19 an emphatic league finish, steamrolling SD Solares 13-0 on April 19, 2026.
The attacker bagged the five goals in a span of 39 minutes to seal an emphatic individual display. This record-breaking feat set a new personal best for the youngster, surpassing his previous record of four goals in a single match set back in March.
The feat will see him join his compatriot Job Ochieng of Real Sociedad B among Kenyan players in La Liga 2.
