Kakamega Homeboyz have edged Sofapaka 2-0 in a sombre clash at the Bukhungu Stadium on Friday, February 20, 2026.

The clash was dedicated to departed player Silas Abunanga, who tragically passed away on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, following a family dispute after being hit by a close relative in a suspected family feud a day earlier.

He died of a head injury at the Kakamega County General Hospital.

Despite the prevailing dark mood around a well-attended stadium following the decision to waive gate charges for the tie, the hosts made light work of Sofapaka, with Peter Thiong’o and Shafik Batambuze’s goals in either end of the half securing victory for Patrick Odhiambo’s lads.

Send off

The win saw them extend their impressive runs in recent fixtures, climbing to third in the pile, albeit on goal difference

“A perfect, decent send-off for our departed brother Silas Abungana. Rest well, Siloh,” the club statement read after the win.

Focus now shifts to paying the slain footballer his last respects ahead of his burial.

Abunanga, 27, featured for Shabana FC and Gucha Youth during his heyday. He is set to be laid to rest on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at his home in Itenyi Sub-location, Muranda.

This comes as an inquest into his sudden death continues after the club chairman sought authorities’ intervention on the events leading to the player’s demise.

“I would ask the government to intervene and help us arrest the person culpable for clarity, and also get the family to shed more light on the circumstances leading to his death. At the moment, there is a lot of conflicting news. Some are claiming it is a land dispute, while others say he had married someone whom the family did not approve of,” he explained in a past interview.

Following the encounter against Sofapaka, supporters, friends, and members of the club were accorded a solemn opportunity to pay their last respects. The club fraternity, led by chairman Cleophas Shimanyula and captain Moses Mudavadi, led the session.

The cortege then proceeded to Murada for a night vigil.
