English Cup progression for Harambee Stars duo Sichenje and Onyango

Kenyan duo Collins Sichenje of Charlton Athletic and Tyler Onyango of Sheffield Wednesday both secured their places in the second round of the English Football League Cup following victories for their respective teams on Saturday, August 8, 2026.
The opening round of the competition produced plenty of drama, with several ties going down to penalty shootouts.

Championship side Charlton Athletic produced a dominant first-half performance, scoring three times en route to a comfortable 3–1 away victory over Cheltenham Town.
Sichenje was named among the match-day substitutes and got his chance after being introduced in the match as the Addicks held firm to advance to the next round.
Onyango watches on as his new club
At Hillsborough Stadium, Harambee Stars prospect Tyler Onyango watched from the bench as his new club dispatched former Premier League outfit Bolton Wanderers 1–0 to progress. Substitute Jamal Lowe bagged the all-important goal in the second half to send the Owls into the second round.
Midfielder Onyango recently departed his boyhood club Everton, signing a three-year contract with League One side Sheffield Wednesday on Thursday, August 6, 2026.
The move marks a fresh chapter for the 23-year-old British-born midfielder, who remains eligible to represent Kenya internationally through his father. Onyango has been included in Sheffield Wednesday’s 31-man squad for the 2026/27 campaign and will wear the No. 21 jersey.
Elsewhere in the competition, Zak Vyner and his championship side, Wrexham AFC, were eliminated following a first-round defeat.
The midfielder has already signalled his commitment to representing Kenya, agreeing to join the Harambee Stars setup in 2025 following positive talks with national team officials, including FKF Vice-President McDonald Mariga.
Zak Vyner suffers elimination
Southampton, Blackpool, and Bradford were among the other teams to progress, while Peterborough recorded a 1-0 victory over Bristol Rovers.
Meanwhile, Zak Vyner and his championship side, Wrexham AFC, were eliminated following a first-round defeat.
The versatile Kenyan defender played the full 90 minutes as Wrexham’s return to competitive football ended in disappointment as they were beaten 1-0 by Middlesbrough in the first round of the Carabao Cup.
