Homeboyz chair Shimanyula shares club’s devastation after Silas Abunanga’s death

Kakamega Homeboyz chairman Cleophas Shimanyula has confirmed the passing of defender Silas Abunanga, who died in the early hours of Wednesday, February 4, 2026.
Speaking on Thursday, February 5, 2026, Shimanyula described the demise as a huge loss, calling the player a leader and motivator who effortlessly commanded respect from teammates and opponents alike.
Saddened
“We are saddened to lose one of our defenders. He is a player who recently joined the club but went on to be among the first eleven players for us at the young age of 27. When we received the news, my technical manager rushed to his home and took him to the hospital,” he stated.
Shimanyula also addressed the controversy surrounding the player’s death, urging the government to intervene and help the family clarify what transpired.
He noted that there have been inconsistent reports from the family members on the events leading up to the tragic death of his player.

According to initial reports, Abunanga died after sustaining head injuries during a Tuesday night attack by a close relative. He passed away at Kakamega County General Hospital.
Govt intervention
“I would ask the government to intervene and help us arrest the person culpable for clarity and also get the family to shed more light on the circumstances leading to his death. At the moment, there is a lot of conflicting news. Some are claiming it is a land dispute, while others say he had married someone whom the family did not approve of,” he explained.
He strongly condemned the act of taking the law into one’s own hands, asserting that no one has the right to take a young life.
Outpouring of tributes
News of Abunanga’s death has elicited an outpouring of emotion across the Kenyan football fraternity.
His former clubs, Gucha Stars, Shabana, and the Football Kenya Federation, are among those who have mourned the departed player.
A host of FKF Premier League clubs have also sent tributes to the player, who once raised concerns after he came out to express concerns over his life and that of his family members in a controversial post on social media.
“With heavy hearts, FKF sends its deepest condolences following the passing of Kakamega Homeboyz FC player Silas Abungana. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, teammates, the Kakamega Homeboyz fraternity, and the entire football community during this difficult time,” the FKF’s condolences for Abunanga read.
