AFC Leopards down Kakamega Homeboyz to stretch FKF PL race to penultimate games

The FKF Premier League title race will officially be pushed to the wire after AFC Leopards secured a thrilling victory over Kakamega Homeboyz this Saturday, May 16, 2026, at the Mumias Complex Stadium.

Fred Ambani’s charges downed their local rivals in the highly hyped Ingo Derby to claim the maximum three points and maintain the pursuit of Gor Mahia who lead the standings.

Samuel Semo and Emmanuel Lwangu scored the all-important goals as Homeboyz’s consolation came through Boniface Nyabuto deep in stoppage time.

The crucial win puts Ingwe hot on the heels of league leaders Gor Mahia, cutting the gap to just a single point. Gor Mahia, who face Murang’a Seal on Sunday, May 17, 2026, currently lead the standings with 65 points from 31 games, while Leopards lurk behind in second place with 64 points after 32 games.

The tie could as well be decided on the penultimate fixture if Gor Mahia wins against Seal and repeat the same feat in their next fixture before the final clash.

Lwangu on the goal again

The match got off to a dream start for the title challengers, who stormed into the lead in the 23rd minute. Emmanuel Lwangu channelled his inner Gabriel Magalhaes, rising highest to latch onto a precise James Kinyanjui delivery and nod home the visitors’ opening goal from a corner.

The breakthrough strike came just moments after Lwangu had proved heroic at the other end of the pitch, making a crucial block to deny Patrick Odhiambo’s side an early opener.

Proceedings quickly went from bad to worse for the hosts before halftime. Left-back Samuel Semo, who was introduced early following an injury to Vincent Mahiga, doubled the visitors’ cushion with a composed, clinical finish to put Leopards 2-0 up.

Chasing the crown

Ingwe maintained their tactical edge in the second half, with Tyson Otieno dictating the tempo and pulling the strings from the center of the park. Desperate to find a breakthrough, Homeboyz rang the changes at the break, bringing on Henry Omollo and Zinedine Wesonga for John “Buba” Omondi and Potiphar Odhiambo.

Leopards’ defensive resolve proved too tough to crack until the dying embers of the match, when Boniface Nyabuto snatched a late consolation goal for Homeboyz in stoppage time.

With this vital derby victory in the bag, AFC Leopards head into their final fixtures praying that Gor Mahia, who still have three games left to play, drops crucial points along the way.

However, the destiny of the league title remains firmly in K’Ogalo’s hands; Charles Akonnor’s side can seal the championship if they defeat Murang’a Seal on Sunday and maintain their winning momentum in their subsequent matches.
