Gor Mahia gaffer Akonnor calls for complete focus as FKF PL race hits climax
Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor has sent a heartfelt plea to the club fraternity, imploring the faithful to remain hopeful yet cautious as the FKF Premier League title race nears its climax.
K’Ogalo moved within touching distance of the crown on Sunday, May 10, 2026, after Ebenezer Assifuah struck late to salvage a point in a -1-1 draw against Kenya Police at the Nyayo National Stadium.
With the club currently on 65 points, Gor Mahia needs to reach a total of 71 points to become mathematically unassailable.
While the trophy is within sight, Akonnor refused to give in to the temptation of counting their chicks before they hatch, with three games remaining.
In his post-match interview, the tactician called for measured optimism despite the fanfare that followed the crucial point picked up against Police.
Focus
“We need to remain focused and have an idea of how we approach every game until the end of the match. We cannot be complacent and say we have won the match. We need to believe in ourselves as we continue to do the work,” he stated.
The former Ghanaian national team coach admitted the side is a strong favourite but stressed they cannot afford to drop their guard.

“At the end of the season we will know, but we are in a good position; we do not need to panic or put pressure on us. We are doing well, and in our next match, we look at how to get better form today and do it,” he stated.
Race for glory
The 21-time champions remain in command with 65 points, seven ahead of rivals AFC Leopards, who moved to 58 points after beating Mara Sugar on Saturday.
K’Ogalo could wrap up the title race in the next couple of games, or even sooner if Leopards drop points in their remaining four fixtures.
Akonnor’s message comes at a time when the club’s capacity to handle pressure has been under the spotlight.
Before their season-defining Mashemeji Derby win on April 26, 2026, Gor had suffered a slump featuring a loss to Tusker FC and draws against Bandari and Kariobangi Sharks, leading many to doubt their credentials.
Mental battles
Among the critics was Tusker coach Julius Mette, who sharply rebuked the league leaders. At the time, Akonnor defended his squad, attributing the struggles to psychological factors rather than tactical failures.
“We have to win the game in our minds. We have to play it before it even starts, and we need to be mentally strong, and we have prepared the team to be able to deal with such situations,” Akonnor previously noted, underscoring the importance of mental fortitude.
With the title race running on finer margins than in previous weeks, Gor Mahia will be desperate to avoid a repeat of their 2025 implosion, which ended in a heartbreaking trophyless campaign.
