AFC Leopards overcome Mara Sugar to revive thrilling FKF PL title race

AFC Leopards breathed new life into their late push for the league title after a priceless 2-1 victory over Mara Sugar this Saturday, May 9, 2026.

Victor Omune’s second-half strike proved enough for Fred Ambani’s lads to claim maximum points and continue their pursuit of leaders Gor Mahia heading into week 32 games. The veteran attacker stabbed home from close range after Mara goalkeeper Ogenda failed to cling onto a rasping shot from Tyson Otieno.

Beja sets Ingwe on course

Ingwe took the lead early through Hassan Beja’s spectacular thunderbolt. The attacker, renowned for his knack for scoring off the bench, made the most of a rare start to fire the title hopefuls into a 13th-minute lead.

Mara Sugar, the team that ended Ingwe’s unbeaten run earlier in the campaign, looked intent on dealing their opponents another blow. They found a lifeline from the penalty spot after Yassin Badir adjudged a foul inside the box by Ingwe defender Kaycie Odhiambo. Skipper Drona Langa clinically converted from the spot, sending the Humphrey Katasi the wrong way to level the scores.

Title Implications

The clash at Nyayo Stadium carried significant weight in the title race. This was Ingwe’s return to league action after a two-week hiatus following their devastating 1-0 defeat to Gor Mahia in the Mashemeji Derby on Sunday, April 26, 2026.

The two sides started the second half with the game delicately poised. Aware of the need for a second goal to keep their title ambitions alive, Ingwe kept prodding while the visitors remained resolute. Their patience was rewarded at the hour mark with Omune’s decisive breakthrough.

The road ahead

With this victory, AFC Leopards have cut Gor Mahia’s lead at the top to six points after lifting their haul to 58 points.

All eyes now turn to Sunday’s encounter at the same venue, where the reigning champions, ranked third, face off against Gor Mahia.

Charles Akonnor’s side will be looking to move closer to sealing the league title with a win against the law enforcers.

The clash is set to throw a new dimension to the title race that could be called soon, heading to the final four games
