Should Carrick rotate Manchester United squad ahead of Ipswich duel? Ashley Young explains

Former English ace Ashley Young has backed Michael Carrick’s charges to deliver a reaction on the pitch as Manchester United face Ipswich Town in their second league match of the season this Sunday, August 30, 2026.
The Red Devils approach the clash on the back of a surprise 2-0 defeat to Hull City, a match that Young holds provided immediate worries for the club rather than exposing deep, long-term flaws heading into the future.
The former Aston Villa and England winger also predicted that the gaffer will make squad rotations for the encounter, charging the players to step up and prove their capabilities on the pitch.
“When you see the team’s performance against Hull City last week and look at the stats, he would not be happy with that. I would say he has massive concerns—or at least worries—over what he saw,” Young stated in an interview with Sky Sports.
Spotlight on players
Young added that the spotlight and burden of expectation fall heavily on the players named in the XI, as both the manager and fans seek to see the team bounce back to winning ways.
“He will want a reaction today. If he doesn’t get it, the fans won’t have it, and he will also not have it as their coach. Carrick will change something—perhaps the system or personnel—to get the team running,” he added.
“He was a player who wanted the team to work hard, and as a manager, it is the exact same thing he will want to see on the pitch.”
Carrick on loss to Hull
His remarks come after Carrick downplayed the defeat, asserting that his team gained a lot to learn and improve on from their opening performance on enemy territory on Saturday, August 22, 2026.
While acknowledging the disappointing results, Carrick insisted that the defeat will not alter the overall tactical direction or approach the team plans to take moving forward this season.
“That is one game. It is the first game of the season. One game doesn’t change the whole direction of everything and how we intend to proceed, but we need to be aware of where we need to improve. We will stay calm in our bubble and focus on the next game,” Carrick added.
The United-Ipswich clash kicks off at 6:30 pm.
