Liverpool close on Ronald Araujo loan deal from Barcelona

Reports reveal Liverpool have reached an agreement to bring Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo to Anfield on a temporary basis as they look to address a shortage of defensive options.
The Reds are understood to have identified reinforcements at the back as a priority, with several defenders currently unavailable because of injuries. The situation has left manager Andoni Iraola with limited choices ahead of the new campaign.
Jeremy Jacquet is still recovering following shoulder surgery, while Giovanni Leoni continues his rehabilitation from a serious knee problem. Liverpool are also dealing with the absences of Joe Gomez and Conor Bradley, with Bradley not expected to return until November.
Araujo set for Liverpool switch
Liverpool have now reportedly moved quickly to bolster their defence by reaching an agreement with Barcelona over Araujo.
According to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Uruguay international is expected to join the Premier League club on a season-long loan.
The proposed agreement reportedly includes an option allowing Liverpool to sign Araujo permanently when the loan spell ends. The clubs are said to be working on the remaining formalities, with the transfer potentially being completed within the next 24 hours.
Araujo’s versatility could make him particularly useful to Liverpool. Although primarily a centre-back, the 27-year-old is also capable of operating at right-back, giving Iraola an additional option in two defensive positions.
Why Liverpool are interested in Araujo
The move could prove particularly valuable for Liverpool given their current injury problems.
Araujo has accumulated more than 200 appearances for Barcelona, giving him considerable experience at the highest level. However, his position at the Catalan club has become less secure over the past two seasons.
The defender has also experienced periods of injury and inconsistent form, limiting his ability to establish himself as an automatic starter.
During the 2024-25 campaign, Barcelona frequently relied on Pau Cubarsi and Inigo Martinez in central defence. Even after Martinez’s departure, Araujo did not immediately become a first-choice player, with Jules Kounde continuing to occupy the right-back position.
That lack of regular football has reportedly contributed to Barcelona being prepared to allow Araujo to leave on loan.
Liverpool see loan as relatively low-risk deal
From Liverpool’s standpoint, the structure of the proposed transfer could make the move an attractive gamble.
Because the permanent purchase is reportedly optional rather than compulsory, Liverpool would have the opportunity to assess Araujo’s performances and fitness before deciding whether to make his stay permanent.
He may not necessarily walk straight into the starting XI once Liverpool’s defensive department is fully fit. However, his experience and ability to cover multiple positions could become extremely important during a demanding season.
Araujo could also see the move as an opportunity to revive his career after coming under increased scrutiny during his recent spell at Barcelona.
For Liverpool, meanwhile, the arrival of an experienced defender could provide valuable depth at a time when injuries have left the squad short of options.
