CAF President praises Somali referee Omar Artan after UEFA Super Cup appointment

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe has praised Somali referee Omar Artan following his appointment to officiate the 2026 UEFA Super Cup, describing it as a proud moment for Africa and a recognition of world-class officiating, after he was previously prevented from officiating at the FIFA World Cup due to a US visa denial.
In an official statement released on Thursday, 11 June 2026, by CAF, Motsepe said Artan’s rise on the global stage reflects the strength of African refereeing, noting that his achievements continue to bring honour to both Somalia and the wider continent.
“Omar Artan has made Somalia and the entire people of the African Continent extremely proud,” Motsepe said.
He highlighted Artan’s recognition as CAF Men’s Referee of the Year 2025 and his inclusion in the FIFA World Cup 2026 officiating list, describing both milestones as proof of his international respect and consistency at the highest level.

Motsepe also thanked UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin for supporting the appointment, calling it a strong gesture of cooperation between football bodies.
“This is a great honour for Omar Artan and for African referees and is also an excellent example of football bringing together and uniting people from Africa and Europe and worldwide,” he added.
UEFA response
UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin also welcomed the appointment, describing Artan as an “excellent young but already experienced referee” who has proven himself at the top competition level in African football.
He said the decision reflects UEFA’s commitment to cooperation with CAF under their existing partnership agreement, aimed at developing the game and promoting unity, equality and non-discrimination.

Čeferin added that football is meant to connect people, praising Artan’s officiating standards and the collaboration that made the appointment possible.
In an official announcement on Thursday, 11 June 2026, UEFA confirmed that the 34-year-old will take charge of the high-profile fixture between PSG and Aston Villa, scheduled for Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg, Austria.
