AFCON 2027: Latest development at Talanta Stadium worries Kenyans

As Kenya races against time to get its venues and other crucial facilities ready and inline with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) standards ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, the latest development at the flagship project at Talanta Stadium has left Kenyans worried than convinced.
The current state of the Talanta Stadium, alias Raila Odinga International Stadium appears with grass from a section of the pitch surface dug out amid the ongoing underground fibre stitching.
This is a pitch reinforcement technique designed to make a football playing surface stronger, more resilient and capable of handling intensive use.
The process involves embedding synthetic fibres deep into the natural turf and underlying soil. These fibres work alongside the grass roots to create a stronger, interconnected structure that holds the surface firmly in place.
The technology provides several important benefits to a football pitch:
Greater surface stability: The synthetic fibres help keep the turf firmly anchored, limiting the amount of damage caused by players making sharp turns, tackles, sprints and sudden changes of direction.
Enhanced longevity: A stitched pitch is better equipped to cope with frequent matches and training sessions while maintaining its quality for longer periods.
Better playing conditions: When incorporated into a properly constructed pitch with an effective drainage system, fibre reinforcement can contribute to a more reliable and consistent surface.
Less turf displacement: The strengthened surface is less likely to break apart or develop large damaged patches, particularly when the pitch is subjected to heavy use or wet weather.
Faster turf regeneration: By helping secure the natural grass within the soil, the system supports the recovery of worn or damaged sections of the pitch.
Improved surface uniformity: Reinforcement can also help minimise excessive movement, uneven patches and deterioration caused by repeated use.
Kenyans react
Based on the Talanta Stadium pitch status update shared on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, many Kenyans expressed worry that the works are the stadium seem to be taking a step back, rather than entering the final phase of construction ahead of the 2027 AFCON.
Facebook user Silas Ojiambo posed; “Sasa mtangoa grao yote ama?”
Philo Philo on the other hand expressed worry that Kenya will be behind schedule ahead of the tournament; “Sasa si caf wata cancel Kenya?”
Cliff Masese also posed; “Mbona mnang’oa nyasi tena?”
No need for alarm
Commenting on the ongoing stadium construction and upgrade in the country, Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya recently said that it would be premature to conclude that Kenya has failed to satisfy the Confederation of African Football (CAF) hosting requirements because the official findings from the governing body’s most recent inspection have not yet been released.
He urged Kenyans to wait for the formal CAF report rather than rely on reports based on preliminary assessments or speculation.
“There is no cause for alarm or panic. We are committed to delivering a successful Africa Cup of Nations. Kenya remains on schedule, and we will provide a comprehensive update once we receive the full CAF report,” CS Mvurya said.
