President William Ruto departed for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he will attend the second Africa Climate Summit, a high-level gathering of Heads of State and Government focused on advancing the continent’s leadership in climate action and green growth.

In a statement on Sunday, September 7, 2025, State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohammed stated that President Ruto is expected to launch the report “From Nairobi to Addis Ababa: Africa’s Journey of Climate Action and Partnership.”

According to Mohammed, the report reviews progress since the inaugural summit in Nairobi, assesses current challenges, and outlines future pathways for Africa’s climate ambitions.

Furthermore, he revealed that while in Addis, President Ruto will also witness the signing of the Cooperation Framework for the Africa Green Industrialisation Initiative (AGII), which brings together African governments, financiers, the AfCFTA Secretariat, and private sector stakeholders.

“The framework will coordinate financial and technical support, mobilise investment, and align with key priorities such as the Accelerated Partnership for Renewables in Africa, AfCFTA, and the Alliance for Green Infrastructure in Africa (AGIA). A Joint Project Preparation Facility, backed by financial institutions, will fast-track bankable green projects,” read the statement in part.

Similarly, as chair of the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC), President Ruto will champion fair resource valuation, equitable carbon pricing, and financial reforms to ease Africa’s debt burden and climate risks.

He will also participate in negotiations on climate finance aimed at unlocking investment and amplifying Africa’s voice in shaping global reforms.

Beyond the climate summit, Ruto will address the Africa-CARICOM (Caribbean Community) Summit on reparatory justice, debt sustainability, and transcontinental cooperation. He will also hold bilateral meetings to deepen trade ties, strengthen partnerships, and advance collective action on global challenges.

Additionally, he revealed that the president will be the chief guest at the inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, hailed as a symbol of Africa’s self-reliance and a milestone for Ethiopia’s energy development.

“For Kenya, the Ethiopia-Kenya power interconnector already delivers clean and affordable electricity, strengthening energy security, stabilising supply during droughts, and supporting industrial growth.”

Together with the Kenya-Tanzania interconnector, these regional energy links are enhancing power trade, improving grid stability, and accelerating East Africa’s integration through renewable energy sharing.
