Vihiga residents warned against lynching suspected criminals

Members of the public in Vihiga county have been asked to hand over crime suspects to police for prosecution instead of subjecting them to mob justice.
Speaking on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, Luanda sub-county OCPD Richard Siele decried the culture of members of the public lynching suspects and observed that police fail to get crucial information from the suspects because they are killed.
He said when crime suspects are arrested, they are supposed to be handed to police for interrogation to reveal more information on their accomplices in crime, reveal the area of operations or hideouts and also help recover stolen items.
He added that the information from the suspects also helps police to process suspects for prosecution.
” I am appealing to members of the public not to take the law into their own hands by lynching suspects. I urge the members of the public to hand over the suspects to the police so that the police can interrogate them to extract more information from them. The information from suspects is crucial because it will help net other suspects and track their crime network. The information will also help police to process the suspects for prosecution in court of law,” Siele said.
” I appreciate that members of the public have remained vigilant on crime. They have formed a security WhatsApp group, which they use to check on security. They should also use the same WhatsApp to inform the police about cases of insecurity.”
Inspector Siele was reacting to the recent horrific incident where two young gangsters suspected of being motorcycle thieves were lynched by the mob in Luanda town, Vihiga County.
The two suspects were lynched at Ebusakami junction in Luanda, where they were frog-matched by the irate mob from Emuhaya.
The suspects, Javan Asiekwe, 27 years old, and Danston Onyango, 23 years old, were cornered by the members of the public dismantling a motorbike, a Boxer 100.
According to Luanda Sub-county OCPD inspector Siele, the suspects were apprehended by the boda boda operators who questioned them over the motorbike they were dismantling.
He said that after questioning the suspects, they failed to comply and resisted, which prompted the mob to beat them to death.
“The members of the public cornered the two suspects, dismantling a motorbike, Boxer 100 red in colour, in Ebuyangu Emuhaya sub-county. The suspects failed to explain why they were dismantling the motorbike, something that forced the mob to beat them to death,” he added.
Inspector Siele said the police discovered that the motorbike, which was recovered from the suspects, was stolen from a health worker in Siaya Referral Hospital.
He said after police searched the details of the motorbike from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), they discovered the owner was from Busia.
Inspector Siele revealed that after contacting the owner, he said his motorbike was stolen from the parking at Siaya Referral Hospital.
“After searching the details of the motorbike from NTSA, we found the owner was from Busia county. After contacting the motorbike owner, he said his motorbike was stolen from the parking at Siaya Referral hospital, where he works.”
Inspector Siele said the suspects who come from West Bunyonyi ward in Emuhaya are said to be behind a spate of crime in Emuhaya, Luanda and the surrounding area.
He said Luanda, Emuhaya and other parts of the Vihiga area have witnessed a wave of crime where motorbike operators have been killed and robbed of their motorcycles.
“The suspects are thieves behind a spate of crime in the area. We have witnessed a wave of criminal activities in the area involving motorbike operators being killed and their motorcycles stolen.”
