Thika Road traffic disrupted following discovery of body in Ruiru River

Traffic along Thika Road has been brought to a standstill on Tuesday afternoon, July 14, 2026, after protesters blocked sections of the highway following the discovery of a man’s body floating in the Ruiru River near Gwa Kairo Stage.
In a video seen by K24 Digital, a large crowd, including boda boda riders and residents, is seen gathering at the scene, with protesters erecting barricades on one side of the busy highway as emergency responders move in to retrieve the body from the river.
Commuters were left stranded on the ever-busy highway, watching helplessly as the rescue mission dragged on for hours.
The discovery sent shockwaves through the area, prompting angry residents and boda boda riders to stage protests that brought traffic to a complete standstill.

Heavy Traffic
The incident has caused heavy traffic for motorists travelling from Nairobi towards Ruiru and Thika, with congestion stretching from the Kimbo underpass to the Ruiru Bypass.
This means that motorists and commuters heading into the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) are bearing the brunt of the disruption, with delays piling up at major intersection points such as Pangani and Ngara.
Drivers travelling from Nairobi are advised to use the service lane and turn towards Ruiru Ndani near Plainsview Hospital. They can then proceed to the roundabout a few metres from Quickmart and take the road that reconnects with Thika Road, avoiding the route leading to Ruiru Prison.
The diversion bypasses the traffic snarl-up before rejoining the Thika Superhighway service lane near the Kenya Power offices in Ruiru, allowing motorists to continue towards Kimbo.

Body of the deceased
The identity of the deceased had not been established by the time of publication, while the circumstances surrounding the man’s death remained unclear.
