Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has weighed in on the chaos that marred a Sunday church service attended by Rigathi Gachagua in Othaya, Nyeri county on Sunday, January 26, 2026.

In his official social media platforms on Monday, January 26, 2026, Sifuna cheekily noted that the dualised Kenol-Murang’a highway is serving so many uses, roping in the infrastructure project in Sunday’s disturbing events.

Referencing the chaos witnessed at ACK church on Sunday, January 25, 2026, Sifuna cheekily wondered if the road was dualised to facilitate faster delivery of teargas to churches in Nyeri.

“We dualized Kenol-Maua road so that state ghouls can quickly deliver teargas to Churches in Nyeri?” Sifuna said.

Sifuna added that development will not make sense if it comes with the loss of national values, adding that while good roads are nice, he would choose freedom and democracy any day.

“I will keep saying “development” will not make any sense once our national values are abandoned. Roads are nice, but I will choose freedom and democracy any day,” he added.

What happened at church service attended by Gachagua

Chaos broke out at Witima ACK church, where Gachagua and his entourage of politicians allied to the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) went to worship on Sunday, January 25, 2026.

The former Deputy President blamed President William Ruto for the chaos, alleging a plot to kill him.

He addressed a press conference detailing similar chaos in the past and alleging that he has been targeted for elimination on a number of occasions but has always survived due to the protection of the members of the public and his security detail.

Widespread condemnation of Nyeri chaos

The events have been condemned with pressure mounting for thorough investigations and those responsible to be held accountable.

“I have noted with great concern the incident at Witima ACK Church in Othaya, Nyeri County. Violence anywhere, and least of all in a place of worship, is unacceptable. I have spoken with the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Douglas Kanja, who has assured me that investigations are underway with the urgency this matter deserves and that the perpetrators will be brought to justice.

The police must move without fear or favour and deal decisively with the sponsors and perpetrators of this act without regard to their status in society or political affiliation,” Cabinet Secretary for Interior, Kipchumba Murkomen, stated.

The National Council of Churches of Kenya added its voice, demanding an apology from CS Murkomen and the Inspector General of Police for the chaos witnessed in the church.
