Scattered rains expected as Kenya Met issues 5-day forecast
By Dan Kauna, August 13, 2026Kenyans across different regions should prepare for mixed weather conditions over the next few days. The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued a five-day forecast running from August 14, 2026, to August 18, 2026.
According to the update signed by duty analyst C. Maswi on August 12, 2026, ‘rainfall is expected in few counties’. This means that while several areas will remain dry, others will experience cool temperatures and occasional light showers.
Chilly temperatures dominate Nairobi and central regions
Residents in the central highlands and surrounding areas will need warm clothing, especially during early mornings and nights.
The weather department noted that “intermittent cool and cloudy conditions are expected in some parts of Nairobi, Kajiado, Kiambu, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Nyeri, Machakos, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, Meru, Nakuru and Kajiado counties.”
In Nairobi, daytime maximum temperatures will drop from 26°C on August 14, 2026, to 22°C on August 16, 2026 and August 18, 2026. Night temperatures in the capital will stay between 11°C and 13°C.
Nyandarua County will record the lowest temperatures in the country, dipping to 7°C on the night of August 14, 2026, and 8°C on August 15, 2026 and August 17, 2026.
Counties such as Nyeri, Kirinyaga, and Murang’a will see light showers in the afternoon and evening. Nakuru County will also have afternoon light showers, with moderate showers expected on Monday afternoon, August 17, 2026.
High heat in the north as coastal areas stay warm
While central counties stay cold, northern Kenya will continue to experience high temperatures. Mandera County is expected to reach maximum highs of 37°C on August 14, 2026, and August 17, 2026.
Turkana County will also hit 37°C on Sunday, August 16, 2026. Wajir County will remain mostly sunny, with light rains predicted for Tuesday morning, August 18, 2026.
Along the Coast, Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, and Lamu will experience sunny intervals and occasional light showers, with daytime temperatures ranging between 28°C and 31°C.
In Western Kenya and the Lake Victoria Basin, counties like Kisumu, Kakamega, Bungoma, and Busia will have sunny mornings followed by scattered afternoon or night showers. The forecast advises residents to check daily updates from local county meteorology offices for area-specific details.
