Saturday weather: Heavy rains to continue across many parts of the country

Heavy rains are expected to continue across many parts of Kenya on Saturday, February 28, 2026, with thunderstorms likely in several regions, according to the Kenya Meteorological Department.

The weather outlook covers the entire country, though rainfall intensity will vary from light showers in some areas to heavy downpours in others.

In the highlands west of the Rift Valley, including Kakamega, Vihiga, Busia, Bungoma, Kisumu, Kisii, Nyamira, Migori, Siaya, Homa Bay, Kericho, Nandi, Bomet, Nakuru, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Trans-Nzoia, and Narok, showers and thunderstorms are expected over several places tonight. Rainfall will continue into the morning and afternoon, bringing relief to regions that have seen dry spells.

The highlands east of the Rift Valley, including Nyeri, Murang’a, Kirinyaga, Embu, Meru, Kiambu, Tharaka Nithi, Laikipia, Nyandarua, and Nairobi, will also see showers and thunderstorms tonight.

Light rains are expected in some areas during the morning, followed by heavier showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. Nairobi residents should expect cloudy skies with occasional rains, particularly in the outskirts like Ngong Hills and Karura Forest.

In the northwestern counties of Turkana and Samburu, light to moderate showers and thunderstorms are forecast, while in the northeastern counties of Marsabit, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir, and Isiolo, residents can expect light rains and isolated thunderstorms, mostly in the afternoon.

The southeastern lowlands, including Machakos, Makueni, Kitui, Taita Taveta, and Kajiado, will experience showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon, with sunny intervals earlier in the day. Meanwhile, the coastline, including Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Tana River, will see scattered showers throughout the day, with occasional thunderstorms expected in the afternoon.

City-specific forecasts show maximum and minimum temperatures ranging from 13°C in Kericho to 37°C in Mandera and Wajir. Sunrise and sunset times vary slightly across the country, with Nairobi seeing sunset at 18:49. Meteorologists advise residents to take caution while travelling, particularly in areas prone to flooding.
