Police arrest 2 gang members in Mombasa

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed the capture of two persons of interest in regard to the rising robbery cases in Mombasa.

In a statement shared on X on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, the DCI stated that the duo was apprehended following a painstaking investigation and hours of grilling by detectives.

According to the agency, the two individuals are believed to be part of an armed gang linked to a series of robbery incidents that have unsettled residents in recent weeks.

Bondo CCTV robberies

In its statement, the DCI said the persons of interest are linked to two infamous robbery incidents captured on CCTV in Bondo Sub-County, Siaya County, on February 4, 2026.

The footage, which widely circulated online and sparked public outrage, showed an armed gang robbing shops and members of the public in broad daylight.

The clips made numerous rounds on social media platforms, prompting calls for swift action from security agencies.

“After painstaking investigation and grilling of the two persons of interest arrested in Mombasa yesterday, detectives have linked the duo to the two infamous robbery incidents captured on CCTV in Bondo, Siaya County,” the DCI said.

Investigators believe the same network may be operating across counties, raising concerns over organised criminal activity stretching from the Coast region to western Kenya.

Forensic Analysis Underway

The DCI further revealed that an AK47 rifle was recovered during the Mombasa operation.

Forensic ballistics examiners are currently analysing the firearm to establish whether it was used in the Bondo incidents.

Forensic ballistics examiners are leaving no room for guesses in their analysis of an AK-47 rifle recovered during the operation in Mombasa.

“The rifle is believed to be the one used to cause mayhem in Bondo as captured in the’ CCTV footage that made an enormous number of rounds on the internet,’ the agency stated.

The Directorate reaffirmed its commitment to dismantling criminal gangs and robbery syndicates across the country.

“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations remains resolute in its fight against criminal gangs and robbery syndicates.

“Through sustained intelligence-led operations and interagency cooperation, we are committed to dismantling these networks, recovering illicit firearms, and ensuring all involved face justice, leaving no safe haven for criminals in Kenya,” the statement read.
