Police are worse than goons – Martha Karua

People’s Liberation Party Leader Martha Karua has said a section of the police is even worse than the goons themselves.

In an exclusive interview with a local radio station on Friday, February 27, 2026, Karua said goons are preferable because they do not know the law, while police officers are trained to uphold it.

Speaking firmly during the interview, Karua said any officer who turns their weapon against peaceful citizens loses the moral authority of the uniform.

Rogue police officer

“They are still goons because what they are doing is not their duty,” Karua said.

She explained that when an officer shoots at a peaceful crowd and injures an innocent person, that officer becomes rogue.

“Even if a police officer shoots at a peaceful crowd and ends up hurting an innocent person, he is a rogue.

“That is what we call a rogue police, and that is actually what we call a goon,” she stated.

Karua added that such an officer is worse than an ordinary criminal because they misuse the authority and tools given to them by the public.

“He is worse than a goon who does not have the law. He actually abuses the weapon that we bought them and turns it into a murder weapon,” she said.

Call for accountability

Karua compared the misuse of a firearm to the misuse of a tool given by an employer.

“It is like picking up a panga he was given by their employer,” she said, stressing that the weapons issued to officers are meant to protect citizens, not harm them.

Her remarks have since sparked debate among Kenyans online, with some agreeing that rogue officers must be held accountable, while others defended the police service, saying most officers serve with integrity.

Karua maintained that accountability within the security sector is key to restoring public trust and ensuring that law enforcement officers carry out their duties responsibly.
