Nyabisase school management explains events that led to teachers’ and students’ clash

The management of Nyabisase Secondary School in Bobasi, Kisii County, has shed light on the events that preceded Monday’s, July 6, 2026, violent clash between teachers and students over the new principal who had been transferred from Mochorwa High School.

Speaking after the incident, on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, Nyabisise Board of Management Chairman Elijah Ombwori said the school is yet to determine what led the students to act the way they did.

“The problem was with the students; we are yet to uncover now what led to acting the way they did,” Ombwori said.

He added that the incoming principal had been received at the school but was later escorted away from the premises as the situation unfolded.

“The one who was to take over, we took care of him, and he left the premises,” he said.

According to Ombwori, the girls’ dormitory was torched at around 11:30 a.m.

“Around 11:30 am, that is the torchlight for the girls’ dormitory,” he added.

Students’ unrest

During the chaos, students pelted teachers with stones, vandalised the school’s CCTV cameras and destroyed property in the dormitory section before setting the girls’ dormitory on fire.

Police were called to restore order as the unrest spread across the school.

Following the incident, Kisii County Director of Education Philip Chirchir, accompanied by senior security officials, visited the school to assess the situation and oversee efforts to restore calm.

The school has since been closed indefinitely, with all students ordered to return home pending further investigations.

Authorities have since launched investigations into the incident, while the Board of Management continues to assess the extent of the damage.

Stone-throwing clashes

What began as a protest against the appointment quickly descended into running battles between students and teachers, with stones flying across the school compound.

According to video clips seen by K24Digital, the school compound quickly turned into a battleground as students, some with their faces covered using school sweaters, hurled stones towards teachers near classrooms and the administration block.

The clips also show teachers picking up stones and throwing them back as they attempted to defend themselves, while other staff stood at a distance watching the confrontation unfold.
