NPS denies reports police shot KMTC student in Huruma

Muchiri Nyaga, the spokesperson of the National Police Service (NPS), has ruled out claims that police shot a Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) student during chaotic scenes in Huruma Estate, Nairobi.
In a detailed two-page statement shared on X on Sunday, February 8, 2026, the NPS said the young person died after being injured in a melee that erupted as officers carried out arrests linked to thuggery in the area.
According to the statement dated Sunday, February 8, 2026, the incident began on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at about 8:00 am, when a member of the public reported to Huruma Police Station that he had been attacked by five youths known to him.

He told officers the group robbed him of a silver chain and Ksh1,800 and threatened to kill him.
Police responded to the report and arrested two suspects at the scene. Further investigations later led to the arrest of two more suspects at around 7:30 pm.
However, during the second arrest, one of the suspects raised an alarm, drawing in other youths who began hurling stones and other projectiles at the officers.
“The officers were forced to fire warning shots into the air in an attempt to disperse the violent crowd and continue executing their lawful duties,” Muchiri Nyaga said in the statement.
A short while later, police received information that a member of the public had been fatally injured during the confrontation.
The NPS acknowledged the death, describing it as tragic, but firmly dismissed assertions that officers deliberately shot the victim.

Accountability process
In the aftermath, tensions escalated in Huruma, with reports of two vehicles being set on fire as law and order briefly broke down.
The police appealed to residents to remain calm and allow accountability mechanisms to take their course.
“The Independent Policing Oversight Authority has been at the scene since early morning conducting investigations, with the police continuing to offer their full cooperation,” Nyaga said.
He added that a full documentation and accountability process was already underway, stressing that transparency would guide the handling of the case.

Members of the public with information were urged to report to the nearest police station or share details through the toll-free numbers 999, 911, or 112, or anonymously via FichuaKwaDCI on 0800 722 203 or WhatsApp 0709 570 000.
The NPS reiterated its commitment to the rule of law and called on residents to desist from further acts of violence as investigations continue.
