Nairobi Water restores supply after pipeline repair in Kiambu

By , June 28, 2026

Nairobi residents can expect water back in their taps following the successful repair of a major leak on the main supply pipeline. The Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company confirmed it fixed the hitch on Saturday evening, June 27, 2026, bringing an end to a weekend outage that left several estates dry.

On Friday, June 26, 2026, the utility firm detected a serious leak on the NCT Fresh Water Pipeline at Riabai, near Kirigiti in Kiambu County. To allow engineers to fix the damage, the company had to shut down the Kigoro-Gigiri pipeline.

This emergency shutdown cut off or reduced water flow to a large part of the city.

Affected areas across Nairobi

The water shortage hit many residential and commercial areas within Nairobi City County. Estates along Ngong Road, Lang’ata, and parts of the city centre felt the pinch.

Other affected areas included Westlands, Lavington, Kilimani, Upperhill, Madaraka, Kibera, and Karen. Residents in Uthiru, Kawangware, Kangemi, Ruai, Ngundu, and Kamulu also experienced dry taps. The interruption even stretched outside Nairobi, affecting customers under MAVWASCO and the Oloolaiser Water Company.

System stabilisation and customer support

Nairobi Water announced that its technical team had successfully plugged the leak and reopened the line. However, because the pipes had run completely dry, the water will not return to all homes at the same time.

The company explained that the flow would return in phases.

In a statement on its official social media pages, Nairobi Water noted, “Water supply is resuming progressively according to the distribution schedule, low pressure will be experienced as the system stabilises.”

Residents are advised to give the system time to build up normal pressure. For households that continue to face extended outages or unique challenges, the company urged them to report the issues.

Customers can reach the utility firm through its toll-free customer care line on 0800 724 366. The customer care desk is also available every day from 7:30 am to 9:30 pm to help track and resolve any outstanding supply complaints.
