Mosiria raises alarm over frequent accidents and robberies at Nairobi roundabouts

Nairobi County Chief Officer for Citizen Engagement and Customer Service, Geoffrey Mosiria, has raised concerns over a surge in accidents and robberies occurring around major Nairobi roundabouts, particularly along Uhuru Highway.

In a statement shared on his official social media accounts on Saturday, January 31, 2026, Mosiria highlighted a disturbing pattern that has been reported in recent weeks.

According to Mosiria, the accidents occur most frequently on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

“We have been receiving numerous complaints about accidents that frequently occur on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays around major roundabouts in the city, especially along Uhuru Highway,” Mosiria said.

He further disclosed that many victims reported being robbed immediately after accidents by individuals posing as first responders.

“A disturbing pattern has emerged. Many victims report that immediately after accidents, they are robbed by individuals who claim to be first responders,” he added.

“At the same time, several tow trucks and recovery vehicles are often stationed around these roundabouts. In some locations, you will find three or four tow trucks waiting nearby even before any accident occurs.”

The situation, Mosiria warned, raises serious concerns about possible organised criminal activity targeting motorists at accident scenes.

“This raises serious concerns and questions: Who is stealing from the victims? Why are these tow trucks always positioned at these specific spots? Are some of these individuals taking advantage of accident victims under the guise of offering help?” Mosiria questioned.

Call for investigations

Additionally, Mosiria called for an urgent investigation by security agencies and traffic authorities to determine whether these incidents are coordinated and to ensure motorists’ safety.

“This situation calls for urgent investigation by security agencies and traffic authorities to establish whether there is any organised criminal activity targeting motorists at accident scenes,” he added.

Road safety

He also called on all drivers to remain vigilant, avoid driving under the influence of alcohol, and strictly observe road safety rules to reduce accidents.

“I also urge all drivers to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol, remain cautious, and strictly observe road safety rules to reduce accidents,” he urged.

Mosiria further urged the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA), and all relevant agencies to do more to improve safety around the city’s roundabouts and provide proper guidance for new drivers.

“To KeNHA, KURA, and all relevant agencies, more needs to be done to improve safety around these roundabouts, including better lighting, signage, surveillance, traffic control, and proper guidance for new drivers,” he added.

“Road safety must go hand in hand with public security. No victim of an accident should suffer further loss through theft or exploitation.”
