Kenya Power reroutes power after Musaga substation fire, restores 90 percent of customers

Kenya Power has restored electricity to approximately 90 per cent of customers affected by the fire at Musaga Substation after transferring them to alternative supply points.
In an official statement issued on Monday, August 10,2026, the utility company said customers previously served by Musaga Substation were transferred to alternative supply points through Webuye, Mumias, Eldoret, Kitale, Kisumu and Rang’ala substations to minimise the impact of the outage.
This temporary rerouting arrangement has helped restore electricity to many affected neighbourhoods while technical teams focus on fixing the main facility in Kakamega.
However, some customers may continue experiencing low voltage as the network operates under the temporary supply arrangements.
“Customers who were previously served by Musaga Substation have been transferred to alternative supply points through Webuye, Mumias, Eldoret, Kitale, Kisumu and Rang’ala substations. Through these alternative supply arrangements, approximately 90% of customers have been restored,” Kenya Power stated.

Work continues at Musaga Substation
Kenya Power said its teams were also continuing with recovery work at Musaga Substation following the fire.
The teams are recovering damaged control and protection cables and laying new ones to restore the protection systems for the 132/33kV transmission lines serving Tororo, Webuye, Lessos and Mumias.
According to the utility company, the work is critical to safely bringing the affected transmission lines and Musaga Substation back into operation.
Kenya Power said efforts were also underway to secure replacement transformers as it works to restore the substation’s full capacity.
The company did not give a specific timeline for the completion of the restoration works but said its teams would continue working to restore stable and reliable electricity supply across the affected areas.

Kenya Power appeals for patience
Kenya Power thanked customers for their patience and understanding as restoration efforts continue.
The company said the temporary supply arrangements were intended to minimise the impact of the outage while technical teams worked on repairing the damaged infrastructure.
The fire at Musaga Substation disrupted electricity supply to customers previously dependent on the facility, prompting Kenya Power to activate alternative supply arrangements from neighbouring substations.
Additionally, the utility company said it remains focused on restoring the affected infrastructure and returning Musaga Substation to full operation.
“Efforts are also underway to secure replacement transformers and restore the full capacity of Musaga Substation. We appreciate the patience and understanding of our customers as our teams continue working to restore a stable and reliable power supply across the affected areas,” Kenya Power added.
