Kenya Power has issued a public alert notifying electricity consumers of an ongoing system outage affecting both token generation and bill processing.

The national grid operator confirmed that its digital payment systems are down, leaving prepaid and postpaid customers temporarily unable to purchase tokens or clear monthly electricity bills.

According to an official statement issued on Thursday, July 30, 2026, Kenya Power all prepaid vending and bill payment platforms are currently unavailable due to a system interruption affecting token purchases

“Our prepaid vending and bill payment platforms are currently unavailable due to a system interruption affecting token purchases and electricity bill payments across all channels,”Kenya Power announced

The issue affects all payment avenues, including M-Pesa paybill options, USSD services, bank apps, and third-party vendor platforms.

The disruption follows a separate overnight blackout that hit several parts of the country before power was restored early Thursday morning.

While electricity supply is back in most areas, thousands of households whose meters are low on units cannot top up until the system returns to normal operation.

Restoration underway

Kenya Power has confirmed that the technical teams are actively working to isolate the problem and bring the payment infrastructure back online.

The utility company has further expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to businesses and households across the country, committing to provide updates as soon as services are fully restored.

Customers who need to check account statuses or request updates are advised to use official communication lines provided by the power distributor.

These include dialling *977# for self-service options, emailing [email protected], calling 97771, or visiting Kenya Power’s official social media pages and newsroom website.

In the meantime, prepaid customers are advised to monitor their remaining meter units carefully to manage power consumption while engineers resolve the system fault.

Widespread blackout

The disruption comes just hours after the utility restored electricity following a widespread blackout that plunged large parts of the country into darkness on Wednesday night, July 29,2026.

The outage affected Nairobi and several other regions, disrupting homes, businesses and internet connectivity before power was gradually restored overnight. Kenya Power later confirmed that electricity supply had been restored to most affected areas after about three hours.

“We are pleased to report that power supply was fully restored to all affected customers by 2:00 am today. We truly appreciate your patience and support as our teams worked to restore service,” Kenya Power stated.

The nationwide outage began on the night of Wednesday, July 29, prompting Kenya Power to issue its first customer alert at 9:05 p.m., confirming a major disruption affecting Nairobi, the Coast region, Mt. Kenya and parts of the Central Rift. At the time, parts of the North Rift and Western Kenya remained connected to the grid as engineers began emergency restoration efforts.

By 10:11 p.m., Kenya Power reported the successful re-energisation of the Lanet, Naivasha and Juja Road substations, allowing electricity supply to resume in sections of Nairobi and the Central Rift.
