Kenya Power announces blackout in parts of 7 counties on Wednesday, December 17

Kenya Power has announced planned power interruptions in parts of seven counties on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, to allow for routine maintenance and network upgrades.

In a notice to customers, the utility company said the outages will affect sections of Nairobi, Machakos, Makueni, Nandi, Kisumu, Migori, and Embu counties, with interruptions scheduled at different times between 8.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m., depending on the area.

Nairobi county

In Nairobi County, parts of Karen and Magadi Road will be affected from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. Areas listed include Brookhouse School, Bogani East Road, Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA), Giraffe Centre, Park Place Hotel, Total Magadi Road, and surrounding neighbourhoods.

Eastern region

In Machakos County, power will be interrupted in Sabaki from 9.00 a.m. to 12.00 p.m., affecting areas such as Alpharama, Old Mombasa Road, Athi 55, Great Wall, Kenchic, and Coloho Mall.

Another outage is planned in Molongo from 8.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m., covering Ngwata Phase 3, Molongo Weigh Bridge, KPLC offices, Sapphire Business Park, and nearby customers.

Parts of Makueni County, specifically the Muooni River to Nziu area, will also experience a blackout between 8.30 a.m. and 5.00 p.m., impacting several trading centres and institutions along the corridor.

In the North Rift region, sections of Nandi County, including Tembwo and Koimet villages, will be without power from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.

Nyanza region

In Kisumu County, Kenya Power said areas around Ngege Beach and Marine School will be affected from 8.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.

The South Nyanza region will see outages in Migori County, covering Muhuru Bay, Macalder, Nyakweri, and surrounding areas, from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. This will affect residential areas, businesses, and institutions, including Osiri Gold Mine and parts of Sori.

Mt Kenya region

Meanwhile, in the Mt. Kenya region, parts of Embu County will experience a blackout from 8.30 a.m. to 4.00 p.m., affecting areas around Tenri Hospital, GK Prisons, Kamiu, Nthokis, and nearby institutions.

Kenya Power has advised customers in the affected areas to plan accordingly and apologised for any inconvenience caused, noting that electricity supply will be restored once maintenance works are completed.
