Kenya Met forecasts rain in Bungoma and 18 other counties

The Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) has forecast rainfall in Bungoma and 18 other counties as parts of the country continue to experience changing weather conditions.
In its latest weather outlook issued on Monday, July 27, 2026, the department said rainfall is expected in parts of Uasin Gishu, Bungoma, Nakuru, Kericho, Kakamega, Trans-Nzoia, Vihiga, Bomet, Nandi, Meru, Elgeyo Marakwet, West Pokot, Mombasa, Kwale, Lamu, Nyamira, Embu, Murang’a and Nyandarua counties.
Apart from the expected rainfall, Kenya Met said intermittent cool and cloudy conditions will prevail in several parts of the country.
The department listed Embu, Kiambu, Kirinyaga, Laikipia, Meru, Murang’a, Nairobi, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Tharaka-Nithi, Kitui, Makueni and Kajiado among the counties expected to experience cool and cloudy weather.
According to the forecast, the cloudy conditions are likely to keep daytime temperatures lower than usual in some areas, especially during the morning and evening hours.
Strong winds
Kenya Met has also warned of strong southerly to southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.5 metres per second) in parts of Marsabit, Isiolo, Garissa, Mandera, Wajir, Tana River, Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Lamu and Kitui counties.
El Niño update
The latest forecast comes as meteorologists and disaster management agencies continue to monitor the possibility of a strong El Niño event later this year.
The agencies forecasted that Kenyans should expect the effects of El Niño from October, with above-average rainfall during the October-November rainfall season.
According to Head of Public Weather Services at Kenya Met, Hannah Kimani, there is an 81 per cent chance that the 2026 El Niño will be very strong and a 97 per cent chance that it will persist into early 2027.
“Above-average rainfall is expected over most parts in October and November,” Kimani said.
“The 2015 was a very strong El Nino, close to 1997 but because the IOD was weakly positive, we did not experience as much rainfall as was experienced in 1997. The outcome of the season will majorly depend on the strength of the IOD.”
Although the current advisory is a routine short-term weather forecast, experts are encouraging both national and county governments to strengthen preparedness ahead of the expected October-December rainy season, when forecasts indicate an elevated likelihood of above-normal rainfall associated with El Niño.
