The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has directed all roadside traders along the Thika Superhighway at Roysambu and Githurai to remove their wares from the road reserve within seven days.

In a post on X on February 9, 2026, the authority said the move is necessary to make way for the construction of designated bus bays along the affected sections.

According to KeNHA, the clearance will help ensure safe and orderly passenger pick-up and drop-off points. It also aims to reduce traffic congestion, which has been a concern for commuters along the busy highway.

“Traders must clear their wares from the road reserve within seven days of this notice,” the authority said.

The notice affects traders in both directions of Roysambu and the Nairobi direction at Githurai. KeNHA explains that the move is part of wider road safety improvement initiatives aimed at preventing accidents and ensuring smooth traffic flow.

Bus bays to improve traffic and safety

KeNHA said the new bus bays will provide structured areas for buses to pick up and drop off passengers safely.

“This is to pave the way for the construction of designated bus bays, aimed at ensuring safe and orderly passenger pick-up and drop-off,” the authority said, noting the project is part of ongoing highway safety measures.

The authority explained that clearing road encroachments is crucial for reducing accidents along the highway. Unregulated roadside trading has contributed to congestion and increased the risk of collisions.

The initiative is designed to protect both commuters and traders while improving overall traffic management.

KeNHA urged traders to comply within the stipulated seven-day window to avoid any disruptions. The authority expressed that cooperation will allow construction to proceed smoothly and improve conditions for all road users.

The clearance is part of a series of measures by KeNHA to modernise the Thika Superhighway and enhance safety standards. Structured bus bays, coupled with cleared road reserves, will contribute to a safer and more efficient transport system along the busy route.

The authority reaffirmed its commitment to road safety, urging traders and the public to support the initiative.

“The project is part of KeNHA’s ongoing road safety improvement initiatives that seek to reduce accidents and ensure the unobstructed flow of traffic along the Highway,” the notice stated.
