Former Roots Party deputy presidential candidate Justina Wamae has criticised Pastor T. Mwangi for telling Christians not to wed at the Attorney General’s office, arguing that marriage registration is a legal process, not a church function.

In a post shared on her X account on Friday, December 5, Wamae dismissed the pastor’s remarks and said the government, not religious institutions, is the official custodian of vital records.

She explained that even the most devout believer must still rely on government documentation at key moments in life, such as death, when families must obtain burial permits and death certificates from state offices.

“Hata uwe umeokoka aje, when you die, your loved ones must get a burial permit and death certificate from the government as required by law not the church. The real witness to the occurrence of death is the government through government officials, not God, since He already knows you died. Thank you very much, important!” Wamae remarked.

She said that the government is always the legal witness because it is the authority mandated to record such events.

Wamae added that the real issue is the growing popularity of civil marriages, which she believes is affecting the revenue streams of churches that depend on wedding-related services.

She emphasised that registering a marriage is a government requirement and not a religious one.

“Issue hapa ni civil marriage is eating into the church’s revenue stream. I mean the registration of marriage is a government requirement not a church requirement. Thank you very much,” she added.

Pastor Mwangi had earlier urged Christians to avoid rushing to the Attorney General’s office for weddings, insisting that God should be the true witness to a union rather than government officials.
