Insurance Regulatory Authority launches crackdown on fake motor vehicle insurance certificates

The Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) has launched a joint enforcement and awareness campaign targeting fake motor vehicle insurance certificates.
In an official statement issued on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, the insurance authority said that it is conducting the exercise jointly with the Insurance Fraud Investigation Unit (IFIU).
IRA said that the crackdown is currently being conducted across key highways and towns in Machakos, Kitui, and Garissa counties.
According to the authority, fake motor insurance certificates put all road users at risk because victims may be left without valid cover in the event of an accident or loss.
“Fake motor insurance certificates put everyone at risk. That’s why the Insurance Regulatory Authority and the Insurance Fraud Investigation Unit (IFIU) are conducting a joint enforcement and awareness drive across key highways and towns in Machakos, Kitui, and Garissa counties,”IRA stated.

Awareness and engagement
IRA explained that the team is weeding out fraudulent insurance covers from vehicles while also educating motorists on how to verify insurance certificates. Adding that they are engaging motorists, matatu operators, Saccos, and traffic police in the fight against fraudulent insurance covers.
Through the exercise, IRA and IFIU officers are not only identifying and removing fraudulent insurance certificates but are also educating the public on how to verify genuine insurance covers before purchasing them.
“Our teams are interacting with motorists, matatu owners, Saccos, and traffic police to weed out fraudulent covers and educate the public on how to verify authentic insurance,” IRA stated.

Motorists have been urged to remain vigilant, protect their vehicles, and always confirm the authenticity of their insurance documents.
“Stay vigilant, protect your vehicle, always double-check your cover,” IRA urged.
According to the authority, the campaign is part of broader efforts to curb insurance fraud, improve compliance in the sector, and ensure that motorists are protected by legitimate insurance policies.
Civic education
Apart from the crackdown, the authority also invited Meru residents for a public to engage with them on insurance-related matters.
They said they were available to answer questions, help consumers understand their rights, support informed decision-making, and provide information on available insurance solutions
“Have questions about insurance? Looking to understand your rights, make informed decisions, or explore available insurance solutions? Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) is in Meru, bringing together consumers, stakeholders, and industry players for engaging discussions, consumer education, and market development initiatives.” IRA said.
