Grief as four brothers drown while swimming in quarry

Tragedy struck Kanyakwar Sub-Location in Kondele, Kisumu Central Sub-County, on Sunday evening after four children from the same family drowned in a water-filled quarry near Kudho Primary School.

The victims, all boys aged between nine and 14 years, are reported to have drowned while swimming in the quarry.

According to a police report seen by K24 Digital, one of the children ventured into the deeper section of the quarry and began to struggle, prompting the others to attempt a rescue.

“One child moved into the deeper part of the quarry and started drowning, forcing the other three to jump in and try to rescue him, but unfortunately all of them were overwhelmed by the water,” read part of the report.

Residents and first responders later retrieved the bodies from the quarry, after which they were taken to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary.

The incident occurred in Winam Division, once again drawing attention to the dangers posed by abandoned quarries in residential areas, particularly those frequented by children.

Authorities have launched investigations into the incident as the community continues to mourn the tragic loss of the four young lives.
