A sombre mood engulfed Kamunyaka village in Mathira Constituency as family members, friends, and leaders gathered to lay to rest a 40-year-old man who was shot dead by a police officer following an altercation in Karatina town more than a week ago.

During the burial, the family called for justice for George Gathu, saying he did not deserve to die in the manner in which his life was taken.

“George was always a happy man, and whenever he was troubled, you could easily tell that something was bothering him,” his sister told mourners.

She said the family remains hopeful that justice will prevail and that the perpetrator of the heinous act will be held accountable.

“I know there is a God in heaven. He says He is a God of vengeance, and I know He will avenge us. Very soon, He is going to wipe away our tears. George, it is not over until it is over,” she said.

Mathira Member of Parliament Eric Wamumbi said he will be at the forefront of ensuring that the officer responsible for Gathu’s death is punished according to the law.

“We are going to walk this journey of seeking justice with the family and ensure there will be no cover-up. We all saw in the CCTV footage that the police officer shot him. We will ensure that the officer is charged and sentenced to a term befitting the crime,” Wamumbi said.
