Atwoli and wife Mary Kilobi surprise Jeff Koinange with cake on his 60th birthday

The Central Organisation for Trade Union (COTU) Secretary General, Francis Atwoli, and his wife, Mary Kilobi, surprised and celebrated media personality Jeff Koinange with a birthday cake to mark his 60th birthday.

Speaking during the surprise after an interview with a local TV station on Wednesday, January 7, 2025, Atwoli reminisced about their long-standing friendship in the United States.

“We have been friends for a long time in the US; we stayed together, and who will have to sing for this, we have a song for this,” he said.

Atwoli went on to praise Koinange for his impact on Kenyan media and society.

“This is a great man. JK, see how young you look. Happy birthday, JK. Jeff, you have made Kenyans proud. It’s only your programme that you dig into me. You understand me well and make me say things that I have never told even my own parents when they were alive, and things I have never even disclosed to Mary. But before you, I will say them. Before you, I will talk.”

On her part, Mary Kilobi described Koinange as an inspiration.

“You are such an inspiration to many, and you are a gift—not only to the media fraternity, but to Kenya, East Africa, and beyond the continent. May this next decade give you the best memories of your life. Happy birthday,” she said.

The surprise celebration reflected the deep respect and admiration the couple holds for Koinange, whose decades-long career in journalism has earned him a lasting legacy both at home and internationally.
