Maureen Nyadida: Last social media posts of Atwoli’s son’s wife and her quiet life online

Maureen Nyadida-Lukoye, the wife of Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary-General Francis Atwoli’s son, Lukoye W’Atwoli, maintained a remarkably quiet presence on social media, with her final public Facebook post offering a glimpse into her life more than two years before her death.

Unlike her Instagram and Threads accounts, which were private, Maureen’s Facebook profile remained accessible to the public and contained a small collection of posts that offered occasional glimpses into her family life, travels and personal moments.

Her last public Facebook post was shared on March 23, 2024, and featured a selfie in which she smiled warmly at the camera while appearing to be inside what looked like a supermarket or café.

At the time, Maureen wore a grey T-shirt and had short hair, with the casual photograph capturing her in an ordinary moment away from the public spotlight.

The photograph was among the few occasions when Maureen offered her Facebook followers a personal glimpse of herself, consistent with the relatively low-key manner in which she used social media.

Before that, her most recent post had been shared on November 30, 2023, and shifted attention from herself to her children.

The post featured her children enjoying themselves with their friends inside a colourful indoor play area, with the space appearing blue and carrying a theme inspired by a movie.

The children could be seen playing inside the entertainment facility, offering another glimpse into the family-oriented side of Maureen’s life and the moments she captured away from the public eye.

Maureen’s post before that was shared on July 20, 2023, and showed her posing happily beside a large brown mannequin depicting the Hulk, the fictional Marvel character.

She stood close to the oversized figure and smiled broadly for the photograph, capturing another playful moment from her life outside the formal responsibilities associated with her career and family.

One of the older posts on her Facebook page was shared on December 17, 2018, and featured her children dressed in matching overalls and helmets as they went go-karting.

The photograph captured the children in their coordinated outfits as they prepared for the activity, providing an early glimpse into the family memories Maureen chose to preserve online.

Another photograph from 2017 appeared to show Maureen inside an office, offering one of the few public glimpses into her professional life.

A December 2017 post also featured Maureen together with her husband, Lukoye, as the couple posed and appeared to be relaxing during what looked like a family getaway.

The photograph offered a glimpse into the relationship between the couple, who had spent years building their family away from the intense public attention often surrounding members of the Atwoli family.

Taken together, Maureen’s Facebook posts reveal a woman whose online presence was sporadic rather than constant.

She did not appear to use social media as a running diary of her life, instead posting occasionally to preserve moments involving herself, her children, her husband and experiences away from home.

Maureen Nyadida’s death

Maureen died on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, leaving her husband Lukoye and their four children mourning a woman who had remained largely away from the public spotlight despite being married into one of Kenya’s most recognisable families.

Her husband, Lukoye, announced her death in an emotional social media message in which he revealed that he was struggling to deal with the loss before bidding farewell to his wife, whom he described as his dear companion.

“I will struggle to deal with this. So long, my dear. So long,” he wrote.

The message marked a painful end to a marriage that had lasted more than two decades, with Lukoye and Maureen having built a family together while maintaining a relatively private life.

Maureen had also established a professional career of her own, including years of service at the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), where she worked in compliance before later moving into strategy and organisational change.

Her husband, meanwhile, built a distinguished career in psychiatry and academia and serves as a professor of psychiatry and Dean of Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa.
