Waking up with red eyes is something many people often associate with lack of sleep or exhaustion. However, health experts say tiredness is not always the main reason behind the condition.

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, red eyes occur when tiny blood vessels on the surface of the eye become swollen or irritated.

What are the causes?

One of the leading causes of morning eye redness is dryness. During sleep, the eyes naturally produce fewer tears, which can leave them irritated by the time a person wakes up. The Cleveland Clinic noted that sleeping under direct air from a fan or air conditioner may worsen the condition by drying out the eyes overnight.

Allergies can also trigger redness in the morning. Dust mites in pillows, pollen, pet fur, and even detergents used on bed sheets may irritate the eyes while sleeping. The Mayo Clinic explains that eye allergies are often accompanied by itchiness, watering, or swelling around the eyelids.

Experts further warn that excessive screen time may contribute to the problem. Spending long hours on phones, computers, or televisions reduces blinking, making the eyes dry and strained. Although the discomfort develops during the day, many people notice the redness more after waking up.

Poor sleep habits may also play a role. Sleeping with contact lenses or makeup on can irritate the eyes and increase the risk of infection. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, contact lenses that are not cleaned properly may reduce oxygen supply to the eyes and create discomfort.

In some cases, red eyes in the morning may be linked to infections such as conjunctivitis, commonly known as pink eye. Bacteria, viruses, or allergies may cause the condition and can spread easily through poor hygiene. Symptoms may include discharge, irritation, and sensitivity to light.

Dehydration is another overlooked factor. The Cleveland Clinic stated that insufficient body fluids can affect moisture levels in the eyes, leaving them dry and irritated. Alcohol consumption before sleep may also make the condition worse.

What not to avoid

Doctors advise people not to ignore persistent redness, especially if it comes with pain, blurred vision, swelling, or unusual discharge. Simple lifestyle changes such as reducing screen time before bed, washing bedding regularly, drinking enough water, and getting proper sleep may help improve eye health.

While red eyes in the morning are often harmless, they can sometimes signal that the eyes are reacting to irritation, allergies, or unhealthy habits. Paying attention to eye care and daily routines can help reduce the problem and keep the eyes healthy.
