What happens to your ticket if Kenya aviation workers strike?

Thousands of travellers could face uncertainty from Monday, July 20, 2026, after Kenya’s aviation workers issued a seven-day strike notice that could disrupt flight operations at airports across the country.

For anyone with a flight booked in the coming days, one of the biggest concerns is what happens to an already purchased ticket if the industrial action affects scheduled travel.

The good news is that a strike does not automatically make your ticket invalid. Instead, airlines usually assess the impact on their operations before deciding whether flights will proceed, be delayed or be cancelled.

Your flight may still operate

Even if airport workers begin their strike, not every flight will necessarily be cancelled. Airlines may continue operating some services depending on the level of disruption and the availability of essential airport staff.

Passengers are advised to check the status of their flight through their airline’s official website, mobile app or customer service channels before leaving for the airport.

 If your flight is cancelled

If an airline cancels a flight because airport operations have been disrupted, passengers are usually offered alternative travel arrangements.

In many cases, airlines will rebook affected travellers on the next available flight at no extra charge. The new departure time will depend on available seats and when airport operations return to normal.

Travellers should ensure the airline has their correct phone number and email address so they can receive updates without delay.

Can you get a refund?

If the alternative travel arrangements do not suit your plans, you may be eligible to request a refund for the unused portion of your ticket.

The refund process varies from one airline to another and depends on the fare conditions attached to the booking. Passengers who bought their tickets through travel agents or online booking platforms may also be required to submit their refund requests through those providers.

What if you miss a connecting flight?

A strike can also affect passengers with connecting flights. If one cancelled flight causes you to miss another booking made under the same airline or travel itinerary, the airline may help rearrange your journey.

However, if the connecting flights were booked separately, passengers may have to contact each airline individually to explore available options.

Before heading to the airport

Travellers are encouraged to monitor airline announcements regularly instead of assuming their flight has been cancelled. Arriving early at the airport, keeping travel documents ready and allowing extra time for possible delays can also help reduce stress.

Those travelling for urgent business, medical appointments or family events should consider speaking to their airline about alternative travel options if disruptions become widespread.

Stay updated

Kenya’s aviation workers have maintained that the planned industrial action is aimed at pushing for the implementation of existing labour agreements and is not intended to halt the aviation industry permanently. Even so, the strike could affect passenger handling, baggage services, cargo operations and flight schedules if no agreement is reached before the notice period expires.

For travellers, staying informed will be the best way to minimise inconvenience. Keeping an eye on official airline communication and airport updates will help passengers understand whether their ticket remains valid, whether they have been rebooked or whether they qualify for a refund should their travel plans be disrupted.
