Buying a new smartphone or home appliance has never felt easier. With buy-now-pay-later options available at online checkouts and retail shops across Kenya, you can walk away with an item by paying as little as Ksh1,000 upfront.

The rest is split into daily or monthly micro-payments that seem painless on paper.

For many young earners, these digital payment options offer quick convenience. However, the habit of splitting small bills is quietly creating credit complications for young professionals.

The psychological trick behind small instalments

Split payments alter how the brain processes money.

When a total bill of Ksh30,000 is broken down into daily payments of Ksh100, the purchase feels minor. Buyers tend to focus on the small daily figure rather than the total debt burden.

This behavioural shift is backed by academic research. A 2025 study published in the Journal of Retailing noted that “the presentation of installment prices with buy-now-pay-later lowers consumers’ perception of purchase expensiveness, which increases spending.”

Because the immediate financial pain feels low, young buyers often sign up for multiple accounts simultaneously. A phone instalment on one app, a fashion item on another, and an electronics loan on a third platform can quickly eat into a monthly salary.

When an unexpected expense arises, managing four separate payment schedules becomes overwhelming.

The damage to your CRB standing

Unlike traditional bank loans where borrowing involves formal paperwork, digital instalment plans feel informal. Yet, missing a single micro-payment carries real financial consequences.

Digital lending platforms report repayment histories directly to Credit Reference Bureaus (CRBs).

A missed payment does not simply trigger late fees. It leaves a mark on your credit profile. Even small defaults on loans as low as Ksh500 can lower your credit rating, making it harder to secure traditional bank financing, business loans, or mortgages later in life.

Furthermore, locked devices can disrupt daily work and business communications, compounding financial stress.

Managing buy-now-pay-later facilities requires treating them like standard credit agreements. Before committing to any split-payment contract, calculate the final total cost including admin fees.

Limit yourself to one active instalment plan at a time, and ensure repayments fit comfortably within your monthly budget to keep your credit standing clean.
