Oscar Sudi steps in to support comedian Jemutai after emotional appeal

Kapseret Member of Parliament (MP) Oscar Sudi has stepped in to support comedian Stellah Jemutai Koitie, popularly known as Jemutai Comedian, following her emotional appeal for financial assistance.
Sudi, in a statement shared on Monday, August 31, 2026, after the meetup, said he was moved by Jemutai’s appeal and decided to meet her personally to offer support after she faced challenges following her recent 11th-anniversary celebration.
“Following her emotional appeal on social media, I was moved by Stellah Jemutai Koitie, alias Jemutai Comedian – Chibambe, who had even deactivated her social media accounts,” Sudi said.
Sudi promises support
Sudi said he met Jemutai to offer assistance and discuss ways of helping her get back on her feet.
“Today, I made a point of meeting her to offer my support in my own small way, to help her get back on her feet and to explore how we can take creative arts and stand-up comedy to the next level,” he said.
The legislator also said he wants to support the wider creative industry by creating opportunities through which artists can earn a decent living.
“As a patron, we are determined to create a platform for our creatives so they can earn a decent living and build a foundation for the next generation,” Sudi added.
Jemutai’s situation has renewed conversations about the challenges facing Kenyan creatives, particularly the financial difficulties that can arise when organising large events without sufficient sponsorship or attendance.
Her appeal also attracted support from other Kenyans and leaders, with several people calling for more support for artists in the country.
Sudi’s intervention now adds to the support extended to the comedian as she seeks to recover from the financial setback and continue her career in comedy.
Jemutai appeals for support
Jemutai, on August 17, 2026, appealed to Kenyans for financial support after an empowerment event she organised to mark 11 years in comedy did not attract the turnout she had expected.
The comedian said she was left with financial commitments to service providers and creatives who had worked on the event and asked well-wishers to support her in settling the bills.
“Sadly, the support I hoped for from some of our leaders did not come through. Many promised to stand with me, but today, their absence was deeply felt. It is painful, especially when we see our leaders show up for other artists,” she said.
“We still have commitments to honour the service providers and creatives who worked tirelessly to make this celebration possible. Please stand with me and support me in whatever way you can.”
Her appeal came after she expressed disappointment over the absence of some leaders whom she said had promised to support or attend the celebration.
Shortly after the appeal, Jemutai deactivated her social media accounts, drawing concern and reactions from her fans and fellow Kenyans.
