HELB Ksh500,000 loan for civil servants: How to apply

Government workers who want to return to school and sharpen their skills can now access financial support from the state. The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has invited public officers to take up dedicated funding to cover higher education costs while keeping their jobs.
In an official update released on August 24, 2026, the loans agency urged civil servants across the country to grab the opportunity to advance their studies.
Explaining how the package works, the board noted “quick loan processing, flexible repayment period of 12–72 months, competitive interest rates, and financing of up to KSh 500,000.”
Who can apply for the training fund
The revolving fund targets state workers who wish to step up their qualifications without putting strain on their daily budgets.
HELB confirmed that eligible applicants include civil servants serving in the National Government, County Governments, the National Police Service, and the Teachers Service Commission.
The loan covers several levels of higher education for career progression. Public servants can secure funding for Doctorate degrees, Master’s degrees, Post-graduate Diplomas, and standard Diploma programmes.
The board will also finance professional courses approved by the Ministry of Education in accredited universities or colleges.
Loan terms and application steps
To keep the loan affordable for workers, HELB shared the fund’s terms, capping the annual interest rate at 4%. Successful applicants can borrow up to Sh500,000 to cover their tuition and academic costs.
The repayment period ranges between 12 and 72 months, giving beneficiaries up to six years to settle their balance. Monthly repayments are handled through a check-off system directly from the worker’s salary, ensuring a simple repayment process without manual transfers.
