Every year on August 1, people in Kenya and across the world mark National Girlfriend’s Day.
While many instantly picture romantic dinners and red roses, the holiday carries a rich history that goes well beyond romance.
From sisterhood to romance
The word “girlfriend” first appeared in written English around 1859 to describe a woman’s close female friend. It was not until the 1920s that the term took on a romantic meaning.
The modern holiday gained momentum on August 1, 2006, when authors Allie Savarino Kline and Sally Rodgers promoted the date through their platform, Sisterwoman.com.
They wanted to create a dedicated day for women to express gratitude to their female friends, sisters, and colleagues who provide emotional support through life’s challenges.
As social media usage grew globally, the holiday expanded its reach. Today, people use August 1 to honour both romantic partners and close female friends.
Medical science supports the idea that these social bonds improve well-being. A 2021 study published in the Journal of Women & Aging examined how female friendships affect stress levels.
Lead author Dr Michelle Rodrigues noted, “In order to deal with stress, women can befriend female peers.” Her research team found that conversing with familiar female friends lowers cortisol, the primary stress hormone in the body.
Simple ways people mark the day
There is no formula for celebrating National Girlfriend’s Day. Activities typically match the nature of the relationship being recognised.
For romantic partners, August 1 offers an opportunity to express appreciation. Some partners buy small gifts, write thoughtful notes, or share an evening meal.
Celebrations do not need to be expensive; spending Ksh1,500 on a simple dinner or sending a text message carries genuine weight.
For female friend groups, the day serves as a helpful reason to pause busy work schedules and reconnect. Women often meet for coffee, share a meal after work, or organise small gatherings to catch up on life.
