5 things to check before meeting your online date in person

Dating apps and social media have made it easier to meet people you would probably never encounter in your everyday life. You can chat for weeks, share jokes, talk about your interests and eventually decide to meet in person.
But as exciting as that first meeting can be, remember that someone you know online is still a stranger until you have met them in real life.
Before agreeing to meet your online date, take a few precautions to make the experience safer and more comfortable.
1. Verify that they are who they say they are
Before meeting, take some time to confirm that the person is genuine.
If you have only exchanged messages and photos, consider having a video call first. It can help confirm that you are speaking to the same person in the photos and give you a better sense of who they are.
Be cautious if they repeatedly avoid video calls, refuse to share basic information about themselves, or their stories do not seem consistent.
You do not need to investigate someone’s entire life, but basic verification can help you avoid walking into an uncomfortable situation.
2. Pay attention to their behaviour during your conversations
The way someone behaves online can tell you a lot before you meet.
Do they respect your boundaries when you say no? Do they pressure you to share private information or intimate photos? Are they constantly asking for money or making you feel guilty when you do not respond immediately?
These can be warning signs.
Do not ignore behaviour that makes you uncomfortable simply because you are excited about meeting the person.
3. Choose a public meeting place
For a first meeting, choose a busy public location such as a reputable restaurant, café, shopping centre or other place where there are plenty of people around.
Avoid agreeing to meet at their home, your home or an isolated location.
You should also consider choosing a place you are familiar with so that you know how to leave if you become uncomfortable.
4. Tell someone you trust about the date
Do not keep your first meeting a secret.
Tell a friend or family member who you are meeting, where you are going and approximately how long you expect to stay.
You can share the person’s name or social media profile and agree to check in with your trusted person during or after the date.
If possible, arrange your own transport so you are not dependent on someone you have just met to take you home.
5. Do not let the excitement rush you
You do not owe your online date anything simply because you have been talking for a long time.
Take the meeting at your own pace. You can leave if the person behaves differently from how they presented themselves online, pressures you or makes you feel unsafe.
Also avoid sharing sensitive information such as your home address, financial details or passwords during the early stages of getting to know someone.
A good first date should leave you feeling comfortable, respected and free to decide what happens next.
