Welcoming a newborn into your family is an exciting experience, but preparing for your baby’s arrival can feel overwhelming.

While baby stores are filled with countless products, the truth is that your newborn needs a few key essentials to stay safe, healthy, and comfortable during the first weeks of life.

Here’s a checklist of the basics every new parent should consider.

Clothing

Choose soft, breathable clothing that is easy to put on and take off. You will need:

Bodysuits or onesies
Sleep suits or footed pajamas
Socks and mittens
A warm hat for cooler weather
Light blankets for swaddling or keeping baby warm

Diapering supplies

Be prepared for frequent diaper changes by stocking up on:

Newborn-sized diapers
Fragrance-free baby wipes or soft cotton wool with warm water
Diaper rash cream
A changing mat
A diaper bin or disposal bags

A safe sleeping space
