Spilling cooking oil, fish fat, or nyama choma grease on a favourite cotton shirt usually feels like a total loss. Standard washing powders often fail to lift dark grease patches because oil naturally repels water.
Sending stained clothes to a commercial laundry service or replacing them adds unnecessary costs to everyday household budgets. However, a simple solution sitting right by the kitchen sink offers a fast fix.

Cotton is a natural plant fibre that absorbs liquids rapidly through tiny microscopic gaps. When hot oil hits fabric, it locks tightly between the woven threads.
Standard washing powder slides over these spots because water cannot dissolve oil on its own. Liquid dish soap operates on a different scientific principle because it contains active cleaning agents known as surfactants.
These surfactant molecules feature a dual-ended structure, where one side clings to water while the other side locks directly onto grease.
According to a peer-reviewed study on ResearchGate, “surfactant solutions were most effective against oil stains.” When applied straight to fabric, dish soap emulsifies the grease, turning heavy oil into tiny suspended droplets that wash away cleanly in plain water.
Quick steps to save fabric in five minutes
Rescuing a Ksh1,500 cotton shirt requires action before the spot sets.
Start by laying the garment flat on a clean table and blotting excess oil with a dry tissue. Avoid rubbing the spot during this initial step, as pushing down forces oil deeper into the cotton fibres.
Next, squeeze two or three drops of concentrated liquid dish soap straight onto the mark. Gently massage the soap into the weave using a thumb or a soft toothbrush for one minute.
Allow the garment to sit undisturbed for three minutes so the surfactants can break down the oil bonds. Finally, rinse the spot under warm water and wash the shirt as normal. The grease lifts away completely, leaving clothes spotless without weakening the fabric.
