How to make your scented candles last longer

A quality scented candle can fill your home with a beautiful fragrance and create a cozy atmosphere.Candles do more than light up a room they create ambiance, evoke memories, and set the mood.

To get the most out of your candles, proper care and usage are essential. Whether you are a candle expert or just getting started, these tips will ensure your candles burn beautifully and last as long as possible.

Notably, improper use can cause candles to burn unevenly, produce excess smoke, or burn out more quickly than expected.

Here are some simple ways to extend the life of your scented candles.

Trim the wick before each use

Before lighting your candle, trim the wick to about 5 mm (ΒΌ inch). A shorter wick creates a steadier flame, reduces soot, and helps the candle burn more evenly.

Let the wax melt across the entire surface

tunnellingDuring the first burn, allow the candle to stay lit long enough for the melted wax to reach the edges of the container. This helps prevent “tunneling,” where the candle burns down the middle and leaves unused wax around the sides.

Avoid burning it for too long

Most scented candles burn best for about two to four hours at a time. Burning a candle for extended periods can cause the wick to become unstable and reduce the quality of the burn.

Keep candles away from drafts

To maintain their fragrance and appearance, store candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Exposure to light and heat can cause discolouration and weaken the scent.

Air from open windows, fans, or air conditioners can make the flame flicker, causing uneven burning and wasted wax. Place your candle in a calm, draft-free area.

Keep the wax clean

Remove any burnt wick pieces, matches, or other debris from the melted wax. A clean wax surface helps the candle burn safely and evenly.

Extinguish the flame properly

Instead of blowing out the candle, consider using a candle snuffer if you have one. This can reduce smoke and help preserve the wick. If you don’t have a snuffer, blowing it out gently is perfectly fine.

Store candles correctly

Keep scented candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Excess heat and sunlight can fade the fragrance and soften or discolor the wax over time.
