How to make natural mosquito repellents using homemade ingredients
Mosquitoes remain one of the most persistent household problems, especially during warm and rainy seasons. While chemical sprays are widely used, many households are now turning to natural alternatives made from simple kitchen ingredients that are affordable, safe, and easy to prepare.
These homemade solutions not only help reduce mosquito bites but also avoid the strong chemical smell and potential irritation linked to commercial repellents.
Lemon and clove repellent
One of the simplest natural repellents uses lemon and cloves, both commonly found in kitchens. A sliced lemon combined with cloves placed around the home releases a strong scent that mosquitoes tend to avoid. The mixture works best when placed near windows, doors, or bedside areas in the evening.
This method is popular because it is safe, non-toxic, and requires no mixing or preparation beyond basic slicing and placement.
Garlic spray solution
Garlic is another powerful natural repellent due to its strong smell. To prepare it, crush several cloves of garlic and boil them in water.
After cooling, the mixture can be poured into a spray bottle and lightly applied around doorways, curtains, and outdoor sitting areas.

Although the smell may be strong initially, it fades after a short time while still helping to keep mosquitoes away.
Coconut oil and essential oils mix
Coconut oil, when mixed with natural essential oils such as lavender, eucalyptus, or tea tree oil, creates an effective skin-safe mosquito repellent. The mixture can be applied directly to exposed skin before going outdoors.
This method is widely used because it not only repels mosquitoes but also moisturises the skin.
Vinegar-based repellent
Apple cider vinegar or white vinegar can also be used as a base for a natural mosquito repellent spray. When diluted with water and optionally mixed with a few drops of essential oil, it can be sprayed around the home or applied in outdoor areas where mosquitoes gather.
The strong scent helps disrupt mosquito attraction, reducing bites in affected areas.
Burning herbs method
Dried herbs such as rosemary, basil, or mint can be lightly burned in a controlled environment to release aromatic smoke that repels mosquitoes. This traditional method is often used in outdoor spaces during evening gatherings.

It is important to ensure proper ventilation and safety when using this method indoors.
