Bras and other items people wear too many times before cleaning

There is a chair in almost every bedroom that has given up being a chair. It is now home to yesterday’s jeans, a hoodie worn three times, pyjamas from several questionable nights and gym clothes that are still waiting for someone to make a responsible decision.
We all have clothes we quietly wear again. The truth is, not everything needs to be thrown into the washing machine after one use. Some fabrics last longer when washed less often. Others, however, should not be given a second chance once sweat and body oils have entered the conversation.
So, before you wear that familiar hoodie for the sixth time or convince yourself that your gym leggings are “not that bad,” here are five clothing items people often wear for far too long before washing.
Jeans need limits
Jeans are perhaps the most controversial item in the laundry basket. Some people wash them after every wear, while others seem determined to keep the same pair going until the denim develops its own personality.
The good news is that jeans do not need to be washed every time you wear them. In fact, washing them too frequently can fade the colour, weaken the fabric and affect their shape. If you have worn your jeans for a few hours while running errands or sitting in an office, there is no reason to panic and throw them straight into the washing machine.
However, jeans are not self-cleaning. They still collect sweat, body oils, dust and whatever else you happened to sit on during the day. If they smell, have stains, feel greasy around the waistband or have been worn during particularly hot weather, it is time for a wash.
A good habit is to hang your jeans somewhere with fresh air between wears instead of folding them immediately and putting them back in the wardrobe. Let them breathe. Your jeans need a little space too.
Give your bra a break
Bras are expensive, delicate and capable of disappearing at the exact moment you need one. Because frequent washing can affect their elasticity, many people stretch the wearing period a little too far.
An everyday bra can usually be worn a few times before washing, especially if you have not been sweating heavily. However, wearing the same bra day after day without a break is not the best idea.
Bras sit closely against the skin and collect sweat, body oils and dead skin cells throughout the day. In warm weather, they can get dirty much faster than you realise. And if your bra has started to develop a smell that mysteriously disappears when you spray perfume on yourself, please understand that perfume is not detergent.
It also helps to rotate your bras. Giving a bra time to rest between wears helps the elastic recover and keeps it in good shape for longer. Wash it gently and avoid treating it like a kitchen towel that has survived a family barbecue.
Pyjamas get dirty too
Pyjamas have a way of making us feel innocent. You showered, climbed into bed and did nothing dramatic. Surely, they are still clean?
Well, not exactly.
While you sleep, your body still sweats and releases oils. You also shed dead skin cells, and depending on the weather, you may spend the whole night tossing around like you are auditioning for an action film.
Pyjamas can generally be worn several times before washing, especially if you shower before bed and sleep in a cool environment. But if you sweat heavily at night, sleep without showering or spend your evenings lounging, eating and watching television in the same pyjamas, they will need washing sooner.
There is also a difference between pyjamas that have been worn strictly for sleeping and those that have become your official weekend outfit. Once you have cooked breakfast, answered the door, taken a nap and watched six episodes of a series in them, those pyjamas have had a full working day.
Do not forget your hoodie
A hoodie can be one of the easiest clothes to neglect because it usually does not look dirty. You wear it over a T-shirt, take it off, hang it somewhere and then reach for it again the next day.
Then the next week.
Then somehow, three weeks have passed.
Because hoodies are outer layers, they can usually be worn several times before washing. However, they still absorb smells from sweat, food, smoke and the general outside world. The cuffs, neckline and inside of the hoodie can also collect body oils over time.
If you wear your hoodie every day, especially in warm weather or while commuting, it will need washing more regularly. If you only wear it occasionally over clean clothes, you can stretch the time between washes.
The important thing is not to confuse “it does not have a visible stain” with “it is perfectly clean.” Some of the dirtiest things in life are surprisingly good at hiding.
Wash your gym clothes
This is where we need to be serious.
Gym clothes should be washed after every sweaty workout. Yes, even the leggings you only wore for one hour. Yes, even the sports bra that “does not smell that bad.” And yes, even if you only took three selfies and spent twenty minutes choosing a treadmill.
Gym clothes sit close to the body and collect sweat, oils and bacteria. Leaving them damp inside a gym bag or wearing them again without washing can create stubborn odours that seem impossible to remove later.
The worst habit is taking sweaty clothes off and leaving them in a crumpled ball somewhere. If you cannot wash them immediately, at least hang them up to dry before putting them in the laundry basket.
Your activewear was designed to handle your workout, not become a biological experiment.
