Bad breath is one of those issues people try to manage quietly.

Most will brush more, chew gum, or use mouthwash hoping the problem goes away.

But for many, the smell keeps coming back.

What many don’t realize is that bad breath, also known as halitosis, is often not about poor brushing alone. It can be a sign of deeper issues that need proper attention.

Speaking exclusively to K24 Digital via WhatsApp interview, dental health expert Joseph Munyenze Mulei explained that treating bad breath starts with identifying the real cause, not just masking the smell.

Gum infections

One of the most common but ignored causes of bad breath is gum disease.

Conditions like gingivitis and periodontitis develop when plaque and tartar build up around the teeth and gums. These bacteria produce unpleasant odours and can lead to persistent bad breath.

“Bad breath can be a result of gum infections like gingivitis and periodontitis. These require professional cleaning such as full-mouth scaling and polishing to remove tartar and plaque buildup,” Mulei said.

This is important because once tartar forms, it cannot be removed by brushing alone. Professional dental cleaning becomes necessary.

Food trapped in cavities

Another hidden cause is food debris stuck in damaged teeth.

When cavities form, they create small spaces where food can easily get trapped. Over time, this trapped food begins to break down, producing a foul smell.

According to Mulei, “Food debris trapped in cavities can accumulate and cause odour. Treatment here includes dental fillings to restore the tooth and eliminate the food traps.”

This means even if you brush regularly, the problem may persist if there is an untreated cavity holding food particles.

Gut-related issues

Not all bad breath starts in the mouth. In some cases, the source may come from the digestive system.

Issues related to the gut can contribute to unpleasant breath, especially when digestion is not functioning properly.

“Gastrointestinal factors may also contribute to bad breath. Management may include use of probiotics and other medical interventions such as dietary intake,” Mulei noted.

This shows that oral care alone may not solve the problem if the cause is internal.

Why masking the smell is not enough

Many people rely on quick fixes like mouthwash or chewing gum. While these may reduce odour temporarily, they do not address the root cause.

If the issue is gum disease, cavities, or gut health, the smell will return once the effect of the product wears off.

When to seek help

Mulei advises that proper diagnosis is key, stating that visiting a dental facility allows professionals to identify the exact cause and recommend the right treatment.

Bad breath is not just a surface issue. It is often a signal from your body that something deeper needs to be addressed.

Understanding these hidden causes helps you move beyond temporary solutions and focus on real treatment. Because in the end, fresh breath is not just about what you use, but about what you fix.
