Babu Owino: How to raise children free from emotional trauma

Embakasi Member of Parliament (MP) Babu Owino has urged parents to create loving and stable home environments, warning that children raised in toxic or conflict-filled homes risk growing up with emotional trauma.

Speaking during an interview with Kameme FM on Friday, March 13, 2026, Babu Owino emphasised the importance of showing love and affection to children while they are still young.

According to him, the environment in which children grow up plays a major role in shaping their future relationships and behaviours.

Babu explained that children often mirror what they see at home. If they grow up witnessing constant conflict, fights, or unhealthy relationships between parents, they may carry those patterns into their adult lives.

“Kama mzazi, mtoto akiwa bado mchanga, hakikisha anaona mapenzi nyumbani. Akiona mapenzi akiwa kwa nyumba, atakua bila trauma.”

How unstable homes affect them

He explained that children who grow up in unstable homes may struggle to build healthy families of their own, even if they were otherwise well provided for.

“Kwa sababu mimi na wewe, mtoto anona nimekatia Baby Top, tuna date tunakuwa close kabisa, unasahau mtoto then after six months we move in together. Babu anasema Baby Top amechange, na pia yeye anasema nimechange.”

Babu also highlighted that trauma can come from different family situations, including being raised by a single parent, losing parents at a young age, or growing up in homes where parents are present but constantly busy and emotionally unavailable.

“Zile trauma za upbringing ile inammanisha mtoto amekuwa brought up na single mum au single dad, both parents passed away, or  the parents are available but are too busy wakitafuta pesa, au wako, and they are in an abusive relationship.”

In some cases, he said, children are exposed to abusive relationships or frequent fights between their parents, which can deeply affect their emotional development.

“Mtoto akiona vita na fujo kila wakati, hiyo ndiyo atapeana in life,” he added, explaining that such children may grow up believing conflict is normal in relationships.
