Why many men struggle to forgive a cheating partner

Cheating in relationships is one of the hottest topics among young people today, especially on TikTok, Facebook and X, where stories of betrayal spread like wildfire.

While some women can give second chances, many Kenyan men say forgiving a cheating partner is almost impossible, to them, cheating is one of the biggest relationship deal-breakers, and it is a wound that is hard to forgive and forget.

So why do men, especially Gen Z and millennials, find it hard to move past infidelity?

Here are some of the main reasons why men would rather end a relationship than forgive a cheating partner.

  • Ego

For many men, cheating bruises their ego because their pride is tied to their partner’s loyalty. When a partner is involved in an extramarital affair, they feel humiliated and exposed.

The thought of being told “umeegongewa” hits their ego hard, making forgiveness difficult.

  • Toxic masculinity

According to Kenyan society, men are taught to man up and never look weak. Taking back a partner who cheated is often mocked as being a simp or weak. Because of this, some men would rather walk away than be seen as softies.

  • Fear of mockery or disrespect

Men often struggle to forgive because cheating bruises their sense of self-worth and sparks fear of losing respect from friends, family, or peers.

Among youth, being cheated on can quickly turn into a joke or meme online, and no one wants to be the laughing stock of their crew.

  • Betrayal of trust

Trust is the foundation of every relationship. Once it is broken, most men find it nearly impossible to believe in their partner again. Even if they forgive, the suspicion never fully leaves, and many end up constantly overthinking.

  • Cultural believes

In many Kenyan communities, men are raised to always be in control of their households and relationships. So to them, a cheating partner challenges that sense of dominance, leaving the man feeling powerless.

According to them, forgiving, therefore, feels like giving up control.

Spirit of forgiveness

Forgiveness ultimately comes down to the individual. While many Kenyan men find it difficult to fully recover from a partner’s infidelity, some may ultimately decide to give second chances for love, peace, or even children.

However, cheating remains one of the hardest blows for men to recover from.
