Shalkido and 5 other public figures who recently died

In recent months, Kenyans have mourned the loss of several well-known entertainers and public figures whose deaths have left a void in the country’s cultural and creative scene.
From musicians and comedians to content creators, the wave of losses has drawn tributes from fans and friends and leaders across the country.
1. Shalkido
Starting with the most recent tragedy, Shalkido born Kevin Mburu Kinyanjui and popularly known as Shalkido Ga Cucu, died on Monday, October 6, 2025, after a hit-and-run motorcycle accident on Thika Road between Githurai and Roysambu. He was a rising Gengetone and Mugithi artiste.
The accident left him with severe head injuries, internal bleeding and a broken leg. He was rushed to the hospital, pronounced brain-dead and later confirmed dead. Shalkido had recently appealed for public support before the accident.
2. KK Mwenyewe
Comedian Zakaria Kariuki, better known as KK Mwenyewe, died in mid-July 2025. Famous for his viral impersonations of political leaders, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, KK Mwenyewe succumbed to a short illness while receiving treatment at Kiambu Level 4 Hospital.

Friends later revealed he had struggled with recurring stomach complications.

His death triggered an outpouring of tributes from fellow comedians, media personalities and fans across Kenya.
3. Gatwiri
Tabitha Gatwiri was a content creator and social media influencer known for her humorous sketches and acting in The Real House Helps of Kawangware. She died on October 31, 2024, aged 29, after being found unresponsive in her home following concerns from family when she did not respond to messages or calls.

An autopsy at the Kenyatta University Funeral Home revealed her cause of death as positional asphyxia with brain oedema.
A full toxicology report was planned to rule out any possible poisoning or intoxication.
Gatwiri had gained a large following on TikTok and was recognised for her signature Meru accent and comedic style.
4. Peter Shire Tunya
Peter Shire Tunya, a well-known content creator and member of a vibrant online music community, passed away on August 20, 2025, after a battle with multiple myeloma. He had undergone spinal surgeries in Kenya and was preparing for a bone marrow transplant abroad.
His family appealed for public support to settle hospital bills and fund his treatment. After his death, friends and the creative community came together to raise funds for funeral expenses.
5. Regina Muthoni
Regina Muthoni, a veteran gospel musician known for beloved church songs such as Yesu Ulishinda, died on October 2, 2025, at her home in Githurai 44. Her death was confirmed by family and music industry colleagues, who described her as a pillar of Kenyan gospel music.

Tributes from fellow artists highlighted her decades-long contribution to inspiring worship music in Kenya.
6. Gracious Meyoki
Gracious Teyian Meyoki, a Maasai TikTok creator celebrated for showcasing her community’s culture and traditions, died in September 2025. Family and friends said she succumbed to Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis, a rare clotting condition that caused a sudden decline in her health.
She had been admitted to a Nairobi hospital after complaining of a severe headache.
